Sunday Spotlight: Realtor Alyson Stoakley

I recently met another fabulous Richmond realtor.  She’s a Richmond native and a graduate of the University of Virginia where I also attended, so we hit it off pretty quickly.  I love reading Alyson’s blog where she posts weekly meal plans and home remodeling ideas.  I wish I could eat dinner at her house most nights!

Meet Alyson Stoakley…

When did you get in the real estate business? 
I previously worked as an event planner for Circuit City. When Circuit City closed their doors, I was pregnant with my son and decided a career change was in order. My mom is a Realtor and has been for over 30 years. I grew up hearing about her clients and their housing needs and running work related errands with her in the summer. It was a great job for her as a mom. I had always considered getting in to the business and it seemed like the perfect time to make a move. In the spring of 2009, I got my license and had my first clients, a co-worker from Circuit City, shortly thereafter.

Tell me about your philosophy…
Buying a new home is so exciting but buying a new home can also be an intense and stressful experience.  My goal is to keep my clients happy and make the transaction as smooth and worry free as possible. 

What separates you from the competition? 
When I was growing up and spent those summers in my mom’s mini-van going from her office to attorney’s offices to homes she had sold, I remember always having to make a trip to pick up her MLS book. It was a huge paperback, with every listing on the market and it came out weekly. Things are different now and everything is online. In 2011, the National Association of Realtors found that 88 percent of homebuyers used the Internet as the leading source of information when buying a home.

As your Realtor, I am able to not only post your listing in MLS but also populate and update the listing all over the web, such as Trulia.com and Zillow.com.  I also use social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instragram to market your home. My broker populates the listing to 30+ websites so that your web presence is excellent. Even though majority of buyers are looking for homes online, we should not forget about the other 12 percent, and I still use traditional methods such as open houses and agent previews. They can be just as effective.

As a buyer’s agent, I keep a close eye on listings as they come on the market and if a property meets your criteria, I alert you right away.  Recently, I saw a home come into MLS late one evening and was at the home with my client at 8:30 am the next day hoping to be the first in that listing. Richmond’s housing market has come back and homes in certain areas can be hard to find. I work well and have relationships with other Realtors in the area. If you have a specific need, I will contact a Realtor who specializes in that particular area to inquire about listings that may be about to hit the market.

What are some of the fun things you do to loosen up?
I live in Henrico County, with my husband, Michael and my children, Camille & Clyde. In our free time, we like to go to the beach. My in-laws live in Sandbridge, VA and we love our time there.  I also love to thrift shop and decorate my home. It is hard to find the time but it is one of my favorite hobbies!

Who is your favorite sports team?
Wahoowa! I must confess I am not a sports fanatic! But I would have to say my alma mater, University of Virginia. Another confession, I married a Virginia Tech Hokie and my husband is way more fanatical than I am.

What is your primary real estate goal this year? 
My goal every year is to be a Distinguished Achiever through the Richmond Association of Realtors. You must sell at least $2 Million Dollars in volume on your side of the transaction. I accomplished this goal in 2012 and appear to be on track for 2013.

What’s the last movie you saw? How was it?
I recently flew to Las Vegas to meet my husband who was there for a conference. We watched the Guilt Trip with Barbara Streisand and Seth Rogen on the airplane on the way home. It was surprisingly entertaining.

Given your success in real estate, who would you say you look up to?
Definitely my mom, she has had tremendous success in the business and she inspired me to get started as a Realtor. She is a wonderful resource if I have a real estate question or want to bounce an idea off of her.

What is your favorite local restaurant?
I love Comfort. The food is always delicious! I craved it when I was pregnant and remember waiting outside the door with my husband for them to open at 5:00 pm one Saturday!
