The mortgage program, term, and monthly payment you select should be aligned with your short-term and long-term financial goals. Before you meet with a realtor or mortgage advisor, you should schedule a meeting with your financial planner to make a plan. Too many people fall in love with a house before taking this very important step and end up in over their heads, unable to save for retirement and live the lifestyle they had imagined.
For this reason, I’m always interested in meeting financial advisors to recommend to clients and friends. I was recently introduced to Lana Pennington, a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch. I was immediately impressed with Lana’s energy, wealth of knowledge, and friendliness.
Meet Lana Pennington…
When did you become a financial advisor?
I first became an advisor in 1998 in Columbus, Ohio.
Tell me about your philosophy.
I believe in goals based financial planning. My clients know what is important to them. My job is to listen and then align their portfolios and other aspects of their financial lives to those goals. I measure their portfolio performance against their goals.
What separates you from the competition?
Without fail I act with integrity, honesty and with the skill that comes from experience. I act as an advisor I would want to refer to my own mother. I believe there is a huge emotional component to spending, saving and investing and I honor those feelings to make sure my clients can sleep at night. I stay in constant contact with my clients regardless of their portfolio size.
What are some of the fun things you do to loosen up?
I’m trying desperately to learn the Celtic fiddle! I also enjoy refurbishing vintage cameras.
Who is your favorite sports team?
Being an alum of THE Ohio State University, I’m a lifelong Buckeyes fan. On the pro side I like the Steelers and Packers. As you can see, football is my sport to watch.
Do you have a website or Facebook page that you would like to share?
What is your primary business goal this year?
I hope to continue to grow my client base by acquiring another 50 by the end of the year. I have strong office support that will allow me to maintain my service expectations.
What’s the last movie you saw? How was it?
Lincoln. It was tremendous!
Given your success as a financial advisor, who would you say you look up to?
There are so many strong women who paved the way for us. To zero in on only one is impossible. I look to them to remain strong and to always remember my philosophy of integrity and working hard for my clients.
What is your favorite local restaurant?
Farouks! I adore Indian food!
