Since daddy was out of town this weekend at the Clemson/Georgia game, Darby and I decided to finish the last leg of The Great Taste: RVA Donut Edition. (Daddy couldn’t grasp the concept of driving 25 minutes to taste Country Style Donuts near the airport, so we had to wait for him to go out of town. Ridiculous–I know.) This topic is highly controversial as everyone has his or her own favorite donut place in Richmond, so I am hesitant to take sides; however, I just spent an hour perfecting the above jpeg, and three Saturday mornings tasting donuts, so the show must go on.
I’ve come to the conclusion that it really boils down to what donut style you prefer. For this taste test, I selected three local donut shops: Dixie Donuts, Country Style Donuts, and Sugar Shack.
1) Dixie Donuts– The variety, location, and creativity here are outstanding. However, I am not a fan of cake donuts, so these just don’t do it for me. If you are a fan of cake donuts, you will be in heaven here! (Sorry for the blurry pictures. I didn’t take my own, and I had to borrow some from Yelp.)
2) Country Style Donuts– The drive to Country Style Donuts was well worth it. The yeasty fluffiness of these donuts is heavenly. As far as variety goes, they are very traditional. These were a little on the sweet side for me, and I could have done with a little less of their sugary glaze. They were very rich, and my toddler was a mess after eating one. If you have a major sweet tooth and no toddlers, this is the place for you! Country Style clenches the first runner-up prize.
3) Sugar Shack– The location, donut variety, and donut style at Sugar Shack were perfect for Darby and me. The donuts were fluffy and yeasty with just the right amount of glaze so that we weren’t a complete mess after eating them. In addition to traditional donut options, they also had several creative styles including ingredients like bacon, butterfinger, and cereal. So, without further ado, we are happy to announce Sugar Shack as the winner of the first LOLA!
